OEE – Overall Equipment Effectiveness

In manufacturing, success doesn’t belong to the company with more machines or more employees — it belongs to the one that can fully leverage the potential of its existing resources. OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is the key metric that turns the feeling of “we’re running at 100%” into hard data and shows exactly where losses occur — whether in availability, performance, or quality. When measured correctly, OEE often delivers double-digit improvements within just a few weeks, and all without any investment in new technology.

What is Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)?

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is a quantitative indicator that shows how efficiently a machine is actually operating compared to its maximum potential. It is made up of three components:

  • Availability – how much time the machine was truly producing compared to the planned time
  • Performance – whether it produced the number of units corresponding to the ideal cycle time
  • Quality – the share of defect-free units in the total production

The final OEE value is the product of these three percentages. Even “good” individual numbers can reveal significant improvement potential once multiplied together. In practice, companies that seem to operate at 90–100% efficiency often have a true OEE of only 50–60%, while world-class performance stands at around 85%.

Example OEE Calculation:

If a machine had 100% availability (it produced for the full 8 hours), 100% performance (it produced the required number of units), but 50% quality (half of the products did not meet quality standards), then the resulting OEE is only 50%.

Because 100 % x 100 % x 50 % = 50 %

How to Work With the Results?

OEE functions as a diagnostic tool. It does not solve the problem by itself — but it clearly identifies where the problem occurs. This is followed by the Six Big Losses model, which maps the main sources of losses into three categories and assigns a clear elimination goal to each:

  • Availability – Unplanned downtime (breakdowns, missing material, unplanned maintenance), Planned downtime (setup, preventive maintenance, machine cleaning)
  • Performance – Small stops (under one minute), Reduced production speed
  • Quality – Startup defects, Defects during production

Some losses can be completely eliminated (unplanned downtime, small stops, reduced speed, process defects), while others can be significantly reduced (planned downtime, startup defects). Thanks to this approach, production optimization shifts from random improvement attempts to a systematic, measurable, and sustainable process.

How We Implement OEE at IoT Industries?

Data Analysis and Collection

Everything begins with automatic data collection directly from machines. Together, we define which data is essential (e.g., how much the machine is actually producing, when it stops, and why).

Connecting Production Equipment

We then connect the machines to a unified platform and ensure reliable and secure data transmission — even for older production lines and legacy equipment.

Visualization and Dashboards

All collected data is displayed in clear real-time dashboards. You immediately see where downtime occurs, where performance drops, or where quality issues arise.

Alerts and Actions

We set up automatic notifications for issues (e.g., missing material, unexpected stoppages, performance decline) so you can react before losses occur.

Expansion and Integration

The solution can be easily expanded to additional machines and production lines, and integrated with MES, SCADA, CMMS, BI, and the Ignition platform.

What Will Measuring OEE Bring to Your Company?

✅ Immediate performance increase of 10–15%
Simply starting the measurement creates the so-called “halo effect.” When performance becomes visible, people’s behavior changes — discipline improves, unnecessary downtime decreases, and productivity rises.

✅ A key step toward digital transformation
Transitioning from paper forms and spreadsheets to automated data collection creates a Single Source of Truth for all management levels.

✅ Faster decision-making and immediate actionability
Data is no longer just a backward-looking report. It becomes an active tool for daily production management and supports continuous improvement.

✅ Fast ROI with zero CAPEX
By increasing OEE by 25% across 20 machines, you can achieve an effect equivalent to purchasing five new machines. The return on investment typically ranges from a few months to one year.
