Building and Data Center Monitoring
Building Management Systems (BMS) and Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) systems are used to monitor and manage critical infrastructure systems.
BMS, also known as BAS (Building Automation System) or Building Automation System, focuses on monitoring and controlling internal systems within buildings, including lighting, power, HVAC, heating, fire and security systems, and access control systems. Its use lies in enhancing the energy efficiency of buildings, optimizing energy usage, and providing unified monitoring of all building systems. It also plays a role in building maintenance and advanced system utilization analysis.
DCIM is a system aimed at monitoring and managing data center operations. Although it shares some common elements with BMS, its specialization is in monitoring and controlling components critical to the operation of data centers. These components include servers, data storage, network elements, racks, distribution panels, power distribution units (PDU), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and more.
DCIM not only monitors the status of individual components (on/off) but also tracks detailed real-time parameters such as electrical consumption, current load, and temperature. This data is then analyzed to generate reports and alerts that help prevent potential issues and optimize data center operations.
The most common way to display data from both BMS and DCIM systems is through dashboards, which show the current overall status of all components and indicate any undesirable conditions. Another specific of such applications is the use of a wide range of communication protocols, such as Modbus, BACNet, SNMP, MQTT, OPC UA, REST, and others, depending on the capabilities of the devices. Data transfer from database systems or via text files is also common.
